Title: Geometric Processing in Human-Centric Product Design

Human-centric product design is a challenging work; this is because the products and human bodies are in freeform shapes. Taking design customization in an interactive manner is very time and labor consuming. A lot of attentions have been drawn to design reusing that can transfer a previous design from one model to another.

In this talk, the whole pipeline of design using will be presented.

At the beginning, an instant human body scanner using RGB-D cameras is introduced for human body reconstruction, and a volumetric template fitting method is presented to reconstruct human bodies from incomplete data.

After that, cross-parameterization is presented to find a bijective mapping among the human models. The cross-parameterization is based on the domain decomposition method, which can interpolate the semantic features of human bodies. A robust domain construction algorithm is developed based on the Voronoi Diagram and an efficient domain optimization algorithm is presented to optimize the domain for different models at the same time.

Full customization is good for the products with low-customization cost (e.g., clothes, furniture, etc.). However, for those products that are not made by planar materials, customization for all components is too expensive, and the electronic and mechanical components cannot be freely varied. Therefore, at the end of this talk, a Mixed-Integer As-Rigid-As-Possible (MI-ARAP) shape optimization framework is developed for human-centric product design using standardized components. This framework can automatically select the best-fit standardized components from the element library, and the shapes of the standardized components are preserved in the optimization.

Dr. Tsz-Ho Kwok is currently a Postdoc at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He gained his B.Eng. and Ph.D. in Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering and Mechanical and Automation Engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He has received a few awards including the 13th International Conference on CAD/CG Best Paper Honorable Mention in 2013, the 8th Chinese Youth Science and Technology Innovation Prize (2013), the Microsoft Research Fellowship Nomination Award (2012), and the CUHK Postgraduate Research Output Award (2011). His research interests are image processing, geometric modeling, CAD/CAM, and finite element ****ysis.

During his Ph.D. study, he has published six first author journal papers, and some are in top journals, such as IEEE TIP, IEEE TVCG, and CAD.
